How will you get from one place to another?

Public Transportation: Metro and buses run all over Montreal. Metro tickets are easy to buy at most metro stations, and a metro pass is great if you plan on riding a bunch of the city's major transit routes. Day passes are generally cheap (about $10) and allow you to ride the subway and buses for a whole day!

Using the subway to travel from one city to another is really easy, and if you just want to ride the subway, the ride will cost you just $3.25. You might want to buy ten tickets, since some stations sell them for just $27.50 each. If you want to ride the STC a lot, you might want to get a smartcard that allows you to buy tickets for unlimited rides. Opus cards are very inexpensive, and you pay for them with cash or tickets.

Cash-value cards work like reloadable debit cards, so when someone asks for your money, they just give it to the person who will pay the fare for the trip, and then the fare will be deducted from the money that your account has. When you plan on using the metro or bus a lot, we strongly suggest getting a card that has passes on it, rather than using cash to buy the fares. You will need to have a number of different passes loaded onto your Opuse card, each with a different price.

Passes that are valid for 7 days allow riders to travel anywhere they want to go! Those passes are especially handy if you are going to do a bunch of things! If your stay in Montreal is more than just a week, don't be worried - as long as it's over for 31 days, the fares will be just as cheap.

Montreal has several major highways linking it with the rest of Canada and Quebec. It's best to drive from Quebec or New Brunswick to Mont-Royal by taking the 401 to York (or the 20 to Saint John).

If you've driven from outside Quebec, you can take Highway 41 to travel to Montreal from other provinces. It will also connect you to the capital city of Quebec, Montreal! Highways 15 and 17 lead north-southand along the main lines of the Transcanadiens and other major highways.
