There is an abundance of cheap places to rent apartments in Montreal. Some of them are more affordable than hotels. How can I get from one place to another?

Montreal has many different neighborhoods, so taking public transport or renting a car to get around is advisable. Luckily, you have many choices!

Public Transportation: STM operates both the subway and the bus lines that service the city of Montreal. You may purchase tickets for the metro at many of the stations; we would also highly suggest buying a free day-pass for any trip that you plan to take. A metro or bus pass is only $10 for a full day of free travel!

If you only plan to ride the subway, it will cost you $3.25 to ride the subway for a few minutes. You can buy 10 tickets for $27.50. You will get a one-day pass for $10 or a pass for 10 days for $27.58. You'll need a card in order to buy tickets for the subway or bus system, but you will need to purchase an Ops card in order to make purchases. Opus cards cost $6 and can be filled with money or other value.

Cash values work just like reloadable debit cards - just put some money in the slot on the back of your bus ticket and start riding. If it's likely that you will use public transport a lot, we suggest getting a smart card that charges you a fixed amount for each kilometer of travel. Opus cards are reloadable with cash value or with season passes to ride on the STM subway and buses for a very low price.

Montreal has several highway connections that allow you to go to parts outside of the city, like Quebec City or Ontario. You can reach Montreal easily by taking the 401 in Ontario, or the 20 in New Brunswick/N.

Those coming directly from other provinces can use Highway 4 to get to Montreal, and from there, you can drive to the city of Quebec City! Highways 15 and 17 lead north-southand along the main lines of the Transcanadiens and other major highways.
