How do I get to places?

Montreal has many different neighborhoods, so travelling by bus or taking a taxi is incredibly easy. What's great is that you have lots of different options for getting around in Montreal.

Public Transportation: There are many different ways to get around in Montreal. Metro tickets are easy to buy at most metro stations, and a metro pass is great if you plan on riding a bunch of the city's major transit routes. Day passes cost only $10 for one day and let you travel throughout the city for free.

If you've only planned to take a few subway rides during your trip, the trip costs only $3.25. You will need 10 metro tickets if you are planning to ride the subway a lot. It will cost you $11 to buy 10 Metro tickets. Depending on your plans, you might be able to get a regular pass for $10 or you might want to get a smart ticket for $2. You get that by purchasing a card called an Opis card, and it works much like a regular smartcard. Opus cards cost $6 each, and you buy cards with cash or tourist passes to add to your card.

Cash-value smart cards work just like if your bank deposited money in a credit/debit account, so when someone charges someone to ride a metro or bus, the money is automatically deducted from the balance that was deposited. If it's likely that you'll use public transit a lot, we suggest getting a smart card that allows you to buy a range of different tickets that will allow you to use the STM system to pay for your transportation. Opus cards are reloadable with cash value or with season passes to ride on the STM subway and buses for a very low price.

You can purchase multiple pass types for as long as your trip lasts; if you plan to do a ton of things, you'll enjoy having multiple passes. If your stay in Montreal is more than just a week, don't be worried - as long as it's over for 31 days, the fares will be just as cheap.
