Public Transportation: Metro and buses run all over Montreal. Metro tickets are easy to buy at most metro stations, and a metro pass is great if you plan on riding a bunch of the city's major transit routes. A pass that costs just $10 allows access to all of the subway and the bus networks for one day.

If you only plan to ride the subway, it will cost you $3.25 to ride the subway for a few minutes. You can buy 10 tickets for $27.50. You will need 10 metro tickets if you are planning to ride the subway a lot. It will cost you $11 to buy 10 Metro tickets. If you are planning on riding the metro or the buses a lot, you should get a STM Opus smartcard. This is essentially a card you fill with coins and that allows you to take advantage of the reduced rates that are offered. Opus cards cost $6 each to purchase, and you pay with cash or other valid tickets.

Cash-value smart cards work just like if your bank deposited money in a credit/debit account, so when someone charges someone to ride a metro or bus, the money is automatically deducted from the balance that was deposited. If it's likely that you'll need to use public transport a lot, we highly suggest getting a card that gives you access to more than 100 different types of passes. You will need to have a number of different passes loaded onto your Opuse card, each with a different price.

Passes that allow riders to travel as many times as they want within a certain time frame. This is great if you plan on visiting several different attractions! If it's something that will be fun to spend a whole weekend in Montreal, get en route to the city in just one day and use the bus or metro again for another day.
