How will you get from one place to another?

Montreal has many different neighborhoods, so travelling by bus or taking a taxi is incredibly easy. Luckily, you have many choices!

Public Transportation: STM operates both the subway and the bus lines that service the city of Montreal. You may purchase tickets for the metro at many of the stations; we would also highly suggest buying a free day-pass for any trip that you plan to take. A pass that costs just $10 allows access to all of the subway and the bus networks for one day.

Using the subway to travel from one city to another is really easy, and if you just want to ride the subway, the ride will cost you just $3.25. You may be able to buy ten individual metro tickets, which will allow you to ride the entire system for just $7.50. You will need a prepaid card to ride the metro or bus system in Montreal, and the prepaid card is essentially a smart ticket that allows you to purchase rides and make reservations. Opus cards are available for purchase for only $6 each, and you are able to load the cards with cash or Montreal Metro passes.

Cash-value cards work like reloadable debit cards, so when someone asks for your money, they just give it to the person who will pay the fare for the trip, and then the fare will be deducted from the money that your account has. If there are many times that you will be traveling by public transit, you should get an Ops card that offers you unlimited fares. You should buy either 1-, 2-, or 3-day unlimited pass cards for $10, $15, or $27 for a one-week pass.

Passes that are valid for 7 days allow riders to travel anywhere they want to go! Those passes are especially handy if you are going to do a bunch of things! If your stay in Montreal is more than just a week, don't be worried - as long as it's over for 31 days, the fares will be just as cheap.

Montreal has some great highways, connecting it with the rest of the province and the rest of Canada. It's best to drive from Quebec or New Brunswick to Mont-Royal by taking the 401 to York (or the 20 to Saint John).

If you've driven from outside Quebec, you can take Highway 14 through Mont-Royal to get to Montreal (and even to Quebec City!). From there, it's easy to drive to several other cities in Quebec, but it's easier to get to Montreal by bus! Highway 156 runs north-southern along the shores of the Saint Lawrence River (or the RR) in the city's northeast corner.
