Choosing to stay in an Airbnb or rent a vacation rental is the best way to really get the most out of a trip to Montreal.

How do I get to places?

Montreal has plenty of public transport and is very easily accessible by taxi or car. Luckily, it is not very difficult to find a place to stay in Montreal, and even if you are very lucky, finding a good place to stay can be quite easy.

STM operates both the citys subway system and the citys bus systems. You will be able to buy Metro tickets at most Metro stations. If you plan on riding the metro a fair amount, it is recommended that you get a Metro day ticket. A pass that costs just $10 allows access to all of the subway and the bus networks for one day.

If you only plan to ride the subway, it will cost you $3.25 to ride the subway for a few minutes. You can buy 10 tickets for $27.50. You could get a good deal by buying a cheap set of metro tickets ($12) that allows you to ride the metro or bus system unlimited times. You may be able to get a smartcard that allows you to buy unlimited rides and access other features on STM (Societe de transport de Montreal). Opus is a simple smart card that allows you to pay for your rides with any amount of cash or a pass.

Cash-value smart cards work just like if your bank deposited money in a credit/debit account, so when someone charges someone to ride a metro or bus, the money is automatically deducted from the balance that was deposited. If it's likely that you'll need to use public transport a lot, we highly suggest getting a card that gives you access to more than 100 different types of passes. Opus cards cost $6 each, and you pay either with cash or with passes to ride for the day.

Some transit cards let you ride the metro or the bus as often as it's convenient for you. This is great if you plan to do a whole lot if you stay here. If it's going to be a while, don't be worried because Opus is offering 31-day unlimited use passes for only $84!

Montreal has several highway connections that will take you all over Canada. If you've never been to Canada before, driving through Ontario is the easiest way for you to reach Montreal.

Those coming directly from other provinces can use Highway 4 to get to Montreal, and from there, you can drive to the city of Quebec City! Highway 156 runs north-southern along the shores of the Saint Lawrence River (or the RR) in the city's northeast corner.
