How do I get from one place to another?

If you only plan to ride the subway, it will cost you $3.25 to ride the subway for a few minutes. You can buy 10 tickets for $27.50. You could even buy ten tickets to ride the metro for just $27.50 (or, the bus)! If you are planning on riding the metro or the buses a lot, you should get a STM Opus smartcard. This is essentially a card you fill with coins and that allows you to take advantage of the reduced rates that are offered. Opus cards are very inexpensive, and you pay for them with cash or tickets.

Cash values work just like putting money in your bank account and then paying the corresponding fare each time that your transit passes by. If it's likely that you'll use public transit a lot, we suggest getting a smart card that allows you to buy a range of different tickets that will allow you to use the STM system to pay for your transportation. Opus cards let you buy prepaid travel passes that allow you to use all the public transport in Montreal for a single price. These are available in three different packs of $3, $19, and $26.

Passes that are valid for 7 days allow riders to travel anywhere they want to go! Those passes are especially handy if you are going to do a bunch of things! If your stay in Montreal is more than just a week, don't be worried - as long as it's over for 31 days, the fares will be just as cheap.

Montreal has several major highways linking it with the rest of Canada and Quebec. You'll find that driving through Ontario is the easiest way for you to travel to Quebec City. You can get there by taking either Highway 301 or 20 (whichever route you choose) if you live in New Brunswick/New Jersey.

If you've driven from outside of Quebec, you can take the highway that leads through the city to a number of other cities in the country - even to Quebec City! Highways 15 and 16 take you along the main roads of Quebec City.
