STM operates both the citys subway system and the citys bus systems. You may purchase tickets for the metro at many of the stations; we would also highly suggest buying a free day-pass for any trip that you plan to take. Day passes cost only $10 for one day and let you travel throughout the city for free.

If you only plan to ride the subway, it will cost you $3.25 to ride the subway for a few minutes. You can buy 10 tickets for $27.50. You will get a one-day pass for $10 or a pass for 10 days for $27.58. You'll need a card in order to buy tickets for the subway or bus system, but you will need to purchase an Ops card in order to make purchases. Opus cards cost $6 and can be filled with money or other value.

Cash-value cards work like reloadable debit cards, so when someone asks for your money, they just give it to the person who will pay the fare for the trip, and then the fare will be deducted from the money that your account has. If it's likely that you'll need to use public transport a lot, we highly suggest getting a card that gives you access to more than 100 different types of passes. You will need to have a number of different passes loaded onto your Opuse card, each with a different price.

You can purchase multiple pass types for as long as your trip lasts; if you plan to do a ton of things, you'll enjoy having multiple passes. If your stay in Montreal is more than just a week, don't be worried - as long as it's over for 31 days, the fares will be just as cheap.

Montreal has several highway connections that allow you to go to parts outside of the city, like Quebec City or Ontario. It's best to drive from Quebec or New Brunswick to Mont-Royal by taking the 401 to York (or the 20 to Saint John).
