Sometimes the most luxurious hotels in Montreal are quite a bit more costly. There will be many good Airbnbs available and other places you can rent a vacation rental at if you are willing to pay more. These homes for rent are often located in downtown Montreal, an area that has lots of fun things for visitors to see and do. Choosing to stay in an Airbnb or rent a vacation rental is the best way to really get the most out of a trip to Montreal.

How do I get to my accommodation and what can I do?

Montreal has many different neighborhoods, so finding a way to get around quickly by taking public transport or driving is highly recommended. Luckily, you have many different options for getting around in Montreal.

STM operates both the citys subway system and the citys bus systems. Buying a ticket or a pass to ride the metro is easy! We suggest getting sympathetic, as long as you are willing to do a fair amount of walking or biking. You can buy a ticket that will allow you to ride the subway or buses around the city for one day.

If you'd just like to take the subway, a regular ride on the subway costs only $3.25. You can also buy a book of 10 subway tickets for $27.50. You may be able to buy ten individual metro tickets, which will allow you to ride the entire system for just $7.50. You will need a prepaid card to ride the metro or bus system in Montreal, and the prepaid card is essentially a smart ticket that allows you to purchase rides and make reservations. Opus cards cost $6 each, and you may choose to load up the credit card with money or pass money.

Cash-value smart cards work just like if your bank deposited money in a credit/debit account, so when someone charges someone to ride a metro or bus, the money is automatically deducted from the balance that was deposited. If it's likely that you will use public transport a lot, we suggest getting a smart card that charges you a fixed amount for each kilometer of travel. Opus cards cost $6 each, and you pay either with cash or with passes to ride for the day.

Passes that are valid for 7 days allow riders to travel anywhere they want to go! Those passes are especially handy if you are going to do a bunch of things! If it's something that will be fun to spend a whole weekend in Montreal, get en route to the city in just one day and use the bus or metro again for another day. It will cost just $8 to buy a 31-ride transit pass.

Montreal has several highway connections that will take you all over Canada. It's best to drive from Quebec or New Brunswick to Mont-Royal by taking the 401 to York (or the 20 to Saint John).

If you've driven from outside of Quebec, you can take the highway that leads through the city to a number of other cities in the country - even to Quebec City! Highways 15 and 40 run from Montreal to other parts of Quebec and Highway 2 travels between Montreal and Quebec.
