It is true that some of the more luxurious hotels in Montreal are actually quite pricey. There may be an Airbnb or a vacation rental that offers you essentially the same services at fewer prices. Airbnb and other vacation rental options are very common in Montreal. The city is very vibrant and filled with fun things for you to see and do. If staying at one or more of Montreal's many vacation homes or Airbnbs is what you want to do, then staying at one or more of the many other places that people rent their homes and offer great views are perfect.

How can I get from one place to another?

Montreal has many neighborhoods that are hard to access by foot, so taking public transit or renting a car to get around is advisable. You will have plenty of options to get around in Montreal, so keep in mind that you have many different options available.

Public Transportation: STM operates both the subway and the bus lines that service the city of Montreal. Metro tickets are easy to buy at most metro stations, and a metro pass is great if you plan on riding a bunch of the city's major transit routes. Passes for one day are only $10; they will allow you to travel around the city for one full day.

If you'd just like to take the subway, a regular ride on the subway costs only $3.25. You can also buy a book of 10 subway tickets for $27.50. You could get a good deal by buying a cheap set of metro tickets ($12) that allows you to ride the metro or bus system unlimited times. If you are planning on riding the metro or the buses a lot, you should get a STM Opus smartcard. This is essentially a card you fill with coins and that allows you to take advantage of the reduced rates that are offered. Opus cards cost $6 and can be filled with money or other value.

Cash-value smart cards work just like if your bank deposited money in a credit/debit account, so when someone charges someone to ride a metro or bus, the money is automatically deducted from the balance that was deposited. If it's likely that you'll use public transit often, you might want to buy an Ops card that has a number of fares attached to it, and not get cash. Opus cards are reloadable with cash value or with season passes to ride on the STM subway and buses for a very low price.

You can purchase multiple pass types for as long as your trip lasts; if you plan to do a ton of things, you'll enjoy having multiple passes. If your stay in Montreal is more than just a week, don't be worried - as long as it's over for 31 days, the fares will be just as cheap.

Montreal has several highway connections that will take you all over Canada. If you've driven from an area other than Quebec or New Brunswick, the highway to reach Montreal will be the 401 in Ontario and the 20 in New Brunswick.

If you've driven from outside Quebec, you can take Highway 14 through Mont-Royal to get to Montreal (and even to Quebec City!). From there, it's easy to drive to several other cities in Quebec, but it's easier to get to Montreal by bus! Highway 156 runs north-southern along the shores of the Saint Lawrence River (or the RR) in the city's northeast corner.
