How can I get from one place to another?

Montreal has many different neighborhoods, and if you are driving, you'll have to take public transport to get around. It is easy to get around Montreal by public transportation or by car, but luckily, you have plenty of options.

Public Transportation: STM operates both the subway and the bus lines that service the city of Montreal. You may buy your tickets at most stations, but if you are going to ride a bunch of subways and buses, getting iPass Montreal is ideal. You can buy a ticket that will allow you to ride the subway or buses around the city for one day.

If you just want to ride the subway, it only costs $3.50 for a one-way ride. You could even buy ten tickets to ride the metro for just $27.50 (or, the bus)! You'll need a card in order to buy tickets for the subway or bus system, but you will need to purchase an Ops card in order to make purchases. Opus cards are really nice and you pay for them with money or with points.

Cash-value cards work just like reloadable debit cards; they allow riders to pay fares for their rides using money that they have saved up. If it's likely that you'll use public transit a lot, we suggest getting a smart card that allows you to buy a range of different tickets that will allow you to use the STM system to pay for your transportation. Opus cards cost $6 each, and you pay either with cash or with passes to ride for the day.

Some transit cards let you ride the metro or the bus as often as it's convenient for you. This is great if you plan to do a whole lot if you stay here. If your stay in Montreal is more than just a week, don't be worried - as long as it's over for 31 days, the fares will be just as cheap.

Montreal has some great highways, connecting it with the rest of the province and the rest of Canada. You'll find that driving through Ontario is the easiest way for you to travel to Quebec City. You can get there by taking either Highway 301 or 20 (whichever route you choose) if you live in New Brunswick/New Jersey.

If you've driven from outside Quebec, you can take Highway 41 to travel to Montreal from other provinces. It will also connect you to the capital city of Quebec, Montreal! Highways 15 and 16 take you along the main roads of Quebec City.
