Choosing to stay in an Airbnb or rent a vacation rental is the best way to really get the most out of a trip to Montreal.

How can I get from one place to another?

Public Transportation: There are many different ways to get around in Montreal. You may purchase tickets for the metro at many of the stations; we would also highly suggest buying a free day-pass for any trip that you plan to take. Day passes are generally cheap (about $10) and allow you to ride the subway and buses for a whole day!

If you'd just like to take the subway, a regular ride on the subway costs only $3.25. You can also buy a book of 10 subway tickets for $27.50. You might want to buy ten tickets, since some stations sell them for just $27.50 each. You may want to consider getting an Opis card, a smartcard that allows you to purchase tickets for a number of different things to do in the city. Opus cards cost $6 each, and you may choose to load up the credit card with money or pass money.

Cash-value cards work just like reloadable debit cards; they allow riders to pay fares for their rides using money that they have saved up. If it's likely that you will use public transport a lot, we suggest getting a smart card that charges you a fixed amount for each kilometer of travel. Opus cards are reloadable with cash value or with season passes to ride on the STM subway and buses for a very low price.

Some transit cards let you ride the metro or the bus as often as it's convenient for you. This is great if you plan to do a whole lot if you stay here. If your stay is longer, don't be afraid - there are 31-day unlimited use passes available for just $84.

Montreal has several highway connections that will take you all over Canada. It's best to drive from Quebec or New Brunswick to Mont-Royal by taking the 401 to York (or the 20 to Saint John).

If you've driven from outside Quebec, you can take Highway 41 to travel to Montreal from other provinces. It will also connect you to the capital city of Quebec, Montreal! Highway 156 runs north-southern along the shores of the Saint Lawrence River (or the RR) in the city's northeast corner.
