STM operates both the citys subway system and the citys bus systems. Metro tickets are easy to buy at most metro stations, and a metro pass is great if you plan on riding a bunch of the city's major transit routes. Day passes cost only $10 for one day and let you travel throughout the city for free.

If you'd just like to take the subway, a regular ride on the subway costs only $3.25. You can also buy a book of 10 subway tickets for $27.50. You will need 10 metro tickets if you are planning to ride the subway a lot. It will cost you $11 to buy 10 Metro tickets. You may want to consider getting an Opis card, a smartcard that allows you to purchase tickets for a number of different things to do in the city. Opus cards cost $6 each, and you buy cards with cash or tourist passes to add to your card.

Cash values work just like putting money in your bank account and then paying the corresponding fare each time that your transit passes by. If it's likely that you'll use public transit often, you might want to buy an Ops card that has a number of fares attached to it, and not get cash. Opus cards let you buy prepaid travel passes that allow you to use all the public transport in Montreal for a single price. These are available in three different packs of $3, $19, and $26.
