But hotels in these areas can get very pricey quickly. There is an abundance of cheap places to rent apartments in Montreal. Some of them are more affordable than hotels. These places are often located in Montreal's beautiful historic downtown, where there are many interesting things for visitors to enjoy. Staying at one or more of the places listed here is a great way to get a real feel for Montreal.

How do I get to my accommodation and what can I do?

Montreal has plenty of public transport and is very easily accessible by taxi or car. Luckily, you have many different options for getting around in Montreal.

Public Transportation: SMTC operates both the subway and the bus in downtown Montreal. Buying a ticket or a pass to ride the metro is easy! We suggest getting sympathetic, as long as you are willing to do a fair amount of walking or biking. Day passes cost only $10 for one day and let you travel throughout the city for free.

If you've only planned to take a few subway rides during your trip, the trip costs only $3.25. You will need 10 metro tickets if you are planning to ride the subway a lot. It will cost you $11 to buy 10 Metro tickets. You may be able to get a smartcard that allows you to buy unlimited rides and access other features on STM (Societe de transport de Montreal). Opus cards cost $6 and can be filled with money or other value.

Cash-value smart cards work just like if your bank deposited money in a credit/debit account, so when someone charges someone to ride a metro or bus, the money is automatically deducted from the balance that was deposited. When you plan on using the metro or bus a lot, we strongly suggest getting a card that has passes on it, rather than using cash to buy the fares. You will need to pay for a day of unlimited rides to get around Montreal. These cards are prepaid and you pay with cash or cards that are prepaid.

Some transit cards let you ride the metro or the bus as often as it's convenient for you. This is great if you plan to do a whole lot if you stay here. If it's something that will be fun to spend a whole weekend in Montreal, get en route to the city in just one day and use the bus or metro again for another day. It will cost just $8 to buy a 31-ride transit pass.

Montreal has several highway connections that will take you all over Canada. If you've driven from an Ontario province, you'll want to take the Highway 301 or 20 (or other major routes) to drive to the city.

Those coming directly from other provinces can use Highway 4 to get to Montreal, and from there, you can drive to the city of Quebec City! Highways 15 and 40 run from Montreal to other parts of Quebec and Highway 2 travels between Montreal and Quebec.
