Public Transportation: SMTC operates both the subway and the bus in downtown Montreal. You may purchase tickets for the metro at many of the stations; we would also highly suggest buying a free day-pass for any trip that you plan to take. Day passes are generally cheap (about $10) and allow you to ride the subway and buses for a whole day!

If you just plan on taking the subway, it will cost you about $3.25 to ride the same route. You will need 10 metro tickets if you are planning to ride the subway a lot. It will cost you $11 to buy 10 Metro tickets. If you're traveling a lot, you may want to get a Metro card or an Ops card to use for subway and bus rides. Opus cards cost $6 each to purchase, and you pay with cash or other valid tickets.

Cash-value smart cards work just like if your bank deposited money in a credit/debit account, so when someone charges someone to ride a metro or bus, the money is automatically deducted from the balance that was deposited. If it's likely that you'll use public transit often, you might want to buy an Ops card that has a number of fares attached to it, and not get cash. Opus cards let you buy prepaid travel passes that allow you to use all the public transport in Montreal for a single price. These are available in three different packs of $3, $19, and $26.

Passes that are valid for 7 days allow riders to travel anywhere they want to go! Those passes are especially handy if you are going to do a bunch of things! If your stay is longer, don't be afraid - there are 31-day unlimited use passes available for just $84.
