Public Transportation: STM operates both the subway and the bus lines that service the city of Montreal. Buying a ticket or a pass to ride the metro is easy! We suggest getting sympathetic, as long as you are willing to do a fair amount of walking or biking. You can buy a ticket that will allow you to ride the subway or buses around the city for one day.

Using the subway to travel from one city to another is really easy, and if you just want to ride the subway, the ride will cost you just $3.25. You may be able to buy ten individual metro tickets, which will allow you to ride the entire system for just $7.50. Some people opt to buy an Ops card, a rechargeable smartcard that allows you to use the public transportation system of the city. Opus cards are really nice and you pay for them with money or with points.

Cash values work just like reloadable debit cards - just put some money in the slot on the back of your bus ticket and start riding. If it's likely that you will use public transport a lot, we suggest getting a smart card that charges you a fixed amount for each kilometer of travel. Opus cards cost $6 each, and you pay either with cash or with passes to ride for the day.

Some transit cards let you ride the metro or the bus as often as it's convenient for you. This is great if you plan to do a whole lot if you stay here. If it's something that will be fun to spend a whole weekend in Montreal, get en route to the city in just one day and use the bus or metro again for another day. It will cost just $8 to buy a 31-ride transit pass.

Montreal has several highway connections that allow you to travel easily between other areas of Canada and Quebec. You can reach Montreal easily by taking the 401 in Ontario, or the 20 in New Brunswick/N.

If you've driven from outside Quebec, you can take Highway 41 to travel to Montreal from other provinces. It will also connect you to the capital city of Quebec, Montreal! Highways 15 and 16 go north and south through the city, connecting several major cities in Quebec and Canada.
